The town of Skalná was established below the old Romanesque Wildstein Castle and it extends along the banks of the Sázek Stream. Skalná was even called Wildstein in the past and the history of the town is also connected with this castle and noble families. The first preserved reference to the castle as a water castle dates back to 1166. The main focal point of the town Skalná is the Baroque Church of St. John the Baptist from 1705 - 1707. In the area of Starý Pond you can still find the ruins of an early Gothic castle, with a chateau adjacent to it. Moreover, in history the development of the raw clay mining industry began here, which still exists today as the most important economic activity in Skalná. Thanks to the booming industry, Wildstein grew in size and significance. It became a township in 1865 and was promoted to a town in December 1905. In 1950 it was renamed to today’s Skalná.
